“The National Science Foundation has predicted, based on current growth rates, that the ‘number of transistors produced doubles every year. By the year 2000, microprocessors will contain 50 to 100 million transistors on a one-inch die and operate at 250 MHz.’”
This indicates that the complexity is becoming too great for manual IC design.
